What is Root Canal Treatment?
Does the thought of undergoing root canal treatment fill you with dread and worry? Has your dentist or endodontist in Dubai recommended this course of treatment which has left you feeling stressed about the world of pain that awaits you? Before you begin to panic, it is important that you delve into what undergoing root canal treatment in Dubai really entails.
Root canal treatment, also known as Endodontic treatment, is a procedure in which the entire infected, inflamed or damaged pulp of a decayed or traumatized tooth is removed and replaced with an inert material after cleaning, shaping and sterilizing the area. This saves the tooth from being extracted and restores its functional ability. The pulp is a soft tissue located beneath the white enamel and hard layer called the dentin, containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that help the root of the tooth grow during its development. The pulp can be removed from a fully developed tooth, as the tooth will continue to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. While this form of treatment might have been painful in the past, with anesthetics and modern technology, most cases can be treated comfortably and speedily.

Root Canal Treatment
When a patient reports to our clinic complaining about pain, we first evaluate their history and perform a comprehensive oral examination. Additionally, the endodontist might be required to run a few tests like a cold test, heat test, electric pulp testing, percussion, or palpation testing. Thereafter, radiographs are generated for a proper diagnosis, in order to plan an effective treatment.
The treatment steps that follow are as follows:
- The tooth is first numbed with the help of local anesthesia.
- After the area has been sufficiently numbed, the endodontist drills into the tooth to remove the infected pulp.
- The inside of the tooth’s roots is then cleaned and sterilized.
- This is followed by the cleaning and shaping of the root canals, with the help of certain files and solutions.
- The root canals are then filled with an inert material called Gutta Percha, and the access opening is closed with a filling.

FAQs
Is extraction of a tooth/teeth a better alternative to root canal treatment?
If root canal treatment is possible, then it would be a better choice over extraction. Extracting a tooth can lead to undesirable loss of bone, which could impact the feasibility of future restorations. It could also lead to the loss of space due to the movement of adjacent teeth into the vacant space or spacing between the teeth created due to the extraction. This in turn can cause misalignment of the upper and lower teeth. The only exception to this is in the case of a wisdom tooth that does not have an opposing tooth to be functional. However, in some cases, root canal treatment is not practical and the only option would be to extract the tooth and replace it with a dental implant, bridge or partial denture.
Are root canal treatments safe?
If done correctly, root canal treatments have a success rate of 96% and are thus safe to be done in the case of both adults and children. Furthermore, the root canals are filled with biocompatible materials.
Do I need to take antibiotics before and after root canal treatments?
It depends on the severity of your condition. Your endodontist can determine the need for antibiotics after a preliminary examination. In most cases though, antibiotics are not required unless the patient experiences a facial infection and swelling, in which case, they may be prescribed.
What is an endodontic flare-up?
It is a complication developed after an endodontic treatment, where you experience severe pain and swelling. You should immediately inform your endodontist and schedule a visit. The dentist will re-instrument the root canal and prescribe appropriate medication.
Why does my tooth pain worsen when I am lying down?
While lying down, blood rushes to the head, which can put extra pressure on already sensitive teeth, thereby causing excruciating pain. To resolve this issue, dentists generally recommend painkillers and that the head should be elevated with an extra pillow. You can also place an ice pack on the affected area of your face. Also make sure that no food particles are stuck in the already-formed cavity. Additionally, you can use a mouthwash to prevent this from happening.
What happens if I delay a root canal procedure?
You should avoid doing so as the bacterial infection can spread and form a pus-filled swelling known as a dental abscess. This condition would require immediate medical attention. In some cases, the infection might also spread to your gums, tissue or the bones that support the teeth.
Can I just get a filling even though my dentist has suggested root canal treatment?
No, this is not recommended. Once the infection spreads to the pulp, it cannot be managed by undergoing a simple filling.
Will obtaining dental bridges hurt me in any way?
They don’t usually hurt and also your dentist will make sure to desensitize the region before the preparation starts. Any kind of slight pain or sensitivity post the procedure can be resolved by painkillers. However, if you find yourself under extreme pain, make sure to contact your dentist immediately.
Why do I need a post and core?
In some cases, a significant amount of natural tooth is lost due to extensive decay or injury. In such cases, in order to facilitate a stable crown, an additional procedure called post-core is done to ensure the final crown is stable and durable. The post is a tiny rod that is usually made up of metal that is inserted into the root space of the tooth and protrudes from the root. The core is that which replaces the missing tooth structure and holds a dental crown in place. The post holds the core in place and redistributes stresses down to the root, thus reducing the risk of coronal (crown) fracture, which is the fracture of the coronal part of the tooth.
Should I be worried about the X-ray exposure during root canal treatment?
Dental X-rays used for endodontic treatment have very low radiation, which is why there is no cause for worry. Moreover, patients are asked to wear protective lead aprons to make the process safer.
Will my insurance cover the procedure?
Most insurance providers do cover root canal treatments in Dubai. Connect with our team so that this can be evaluated for you.
